Writing your homepage copy can feel wildly intimidating. It’s the first thing your clients will see when they land on your website, so it needs to make a good first impression. Talk about pressure! Luckily, I have a few tips that will help you write engaging, personal, and actually interesting website homepage copy.
(PSST! If you’re new here – welcome! My name is Jo, I’m a wedding industry copywriter here to give you helpful copywriting strategies so writing doesn’t feel like the worst part of the job. I’m happy you’re here!)
Okay, listen. Your website is your chance to make a connection with your readers, so of course, you want to introduce yourself. But if you take one thing away from this blog post, take this: Your website is not about you. Your website is about your client.
The goal of your homepage copy is to create a genuine connection with your client. So tell them a story. Start with where they are at currently—searching for wedding vendors, trying to stick to their budget, arguing with their parents about whether or not to invite Aunt Linda. But don’t leave them there.
Your homepage copy is about their experience… and how you can improve it.
Alright, now you can talk about yourself.
As your readers go through this journey with you, show how you can change their wedding planning experience. Whether you’re a photographer, planner, or florist, show them how your service will elevate their wedding, remove their stress, and give them something to remember!
I often write “Imagine This,” or “Picture what your wedding would look like if…”
Your homepage copy should show your clients that you get it. You understand where they’re at—BUT you can help them get to where they’re going. This is where you pull out your USP (Unique Selling Point) and show your readers that you are the best option.
You know another purpose of your homepage copy? Introduce your brand voice. Even though you aren’t talking about yourself, your writing still tells your reader a lot about you. The words you use to tell your client’s story show your vibe. Are you down-to-earth and approachable? Bold and edgy? Soft and Romantic?
Your homepage is your introduction, so have fun with it! Tell the story in a way that feels natural to you. Pretend you’re talking to your best friend and include your own little phrases and jokes. Homepage copy doesn’t need to be stiff, impersonal, and full of statistics. It should be fun, genuine, and full of your personality.
I believe in you. I know writing homepage copy is scary, but take your time with it! Send it to someone who knows you and ask them if it represents you well. You don’t have to do this alone!
